SAN DIEGO (Jan. 21, 2009) An operating team at Naval Medical Center San Diego performs a thoracotomy to remove a cancerous portion of a lung using the World Health Organization (WHO) Surgical Check List. The check list was created by the Institute for Health Care Improvement at the request of the WHO to improve communication and provide a more comprehensive way for surgeons to treat their patients.
