Value Stream Design Training

Design your value stream, not just your layout:

Rearranging machines and optimizing individual processes won’t create flow if the overall value stream is broken. In this hands-on course on Value Stream Design, you’ll learn how to engineer flow across your entire production system, from raw materials to finished goods. Whether you’re in discrete manufacturing, batch production, or mixed-model environments, you’ll learn to design value streams that reduce lead time, lower WIP, and deliver faster to your customers.

Understand where your parts come from and where they go.

Map what’s really happening, and what it’s costing you:

We begin with Value Stream Mapping (VSM), using standard value stream symbols to visualize the full current state, capturing not just process steps, but also material flow, information flow, cycle times, changeovers, and delays. You’ll identify where inventory accumulates, where cycle times are mismatched, and where communication breakdowns are driving unnecessary waste. With these insights, you’ll see clearly what’s holding your system back, and where the leverage points are.

Value Stream Design

Do the value stream mapping and find your problem areas.

Build a flow-friendly future state with smart design choices:

Once the current state is visible, we turn to Value Stream Design (VSD), guiding you through the key decisions that shape a leaner future state. You’ll learn how to handle cycle time mismatches without resorting to excess inventory, how to place supermarkets or FIFO lanes based on process constraints, and how to design pull systems or flow loops that fit your actual demand. You’ll explore how to use the right level of control and scheduling, and how to structure your system around takt time rather than fire drills.

VSD goes beyond Value Stream Mapping only. Tools like spaghetti diagrams help spot potential shop floor traffic jams

Turn design into action—with lasting results:

A good design is just the beginning. This course helps you bridge the gap between the future state map and real implementation. You’ll learn how to create realistic improvement plans, define the right implementation sequence, and engage teams across functions. You’ll also learn how to sustain flow over time by spotting when buffers are creeping up, when cycle times drift, and how to realign your system without starting from scratch.
